Course Details: Non-profit organizations that are led with a service heart and a business mind are most likely to thrive. This course will provide you with a path to becoming an authentic, purpose-driven leader and for developing a high-performing team.

In this highly interactive course, you will:

• Gain insight on your leadership style and how to effectively leverage skills of your staff and board.
• Understand the critical role of ethics in leadership.
• Learn to lead with compassion and manage for results.
• Maintain an understanding of the evolving needs of the sector.
• Learn key principles of effective governance and high-performance boards.
• Explore impact measurement and its role in meeting mission.
• Strengthen your understanding of essential leadership skills such as strategic thinking, collaboration and partnership development, advocacy, and more.

This program is geared towards working professionals. While attendees are expected to engage in activities during class, there is generally no homework required. Expect to spend no more than 30-60 minutes per week outside of class. In-class activities, discussion, and engagement will enhance your learning and relevance of topics to your work. Resources will be shared on best practices, current laws and trends, and other topics to help you adhere to legal standards and position yourself as a top employer.

Facilitator: Lisa Novak, MA – Lisa is the Chief Executive Officer of Northern Illinois Hospice, the region's most experienced hospice provider and one of the first fifty in the United States.

Lisa has more than 30 years of leadership experience, including the past 15 in the nonprofit and healthcare sectors. During her tenure, Northern Illinois Hospice has expanded its mission and impact, nearly tripling the number of terminally ill patients served, has increased its service area, established a 501(c)(3) Foundation, achieved Joint Commission accreditation, implemented a complimentary therapy program, embarked upon a successful rebranding initiative, and moved into a new headquarters. Northern Illinois Hospice is proud to be introducing community-based palliative care services in 2024.

Lisa also serves as leader of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization's (NHPCO) CEO/Executive Director community and Vice Chair of the MyNHPCO Executive Committee. She holds a bachelor's degree from Augustana College (Illinois) and a Master of Arts from the University of Nebraska - Lincoln.

Certificate in Nonprofit Management Program Details: Leading a successful mission-driven nonprofit requires more than goals and plans; it requires concrete knowledge and skills. This five-course certificate program, completed by more than 125 area nonprofit leaders, will teach you the skills you need to strengthen your organization and better achieve your mission.

Each course is led by an accomplished expert in their field, including nonprofit executives, doctorate and master-level leaders with advanced certifications, and guest speakers with expertise and decades of experience in nonprofit leadership. If you are a new or seasoned nonprofit leader wishing to broaden or refresh your skills, a board member seeking to serve in a more strategic advisory role, or shifting from the for-profit to the nonprofit sector, this program is for you!

**This is one of the five courses in the Certificate in Nonprofit Management Program. Take any course a la carte or complete the entire series to earn your Certificate in Nonprofit Management from The Northern Illinois Center for Nonprofit Excellence at Northern Illinois University. Courses may be taken in any order and attendance credit does not expire. Upon successful completion of all five courses (with 90% overall attendance) participants will receive a Certificate.
