About the speakers:

Marya Bershov

Marya is a Professor of Organisations and Impact at the Said Business School and the Academic Director of the Skoll Centre for Social Entrepreneurship. Her research and teaching focus on leadership, social impact, and hybrid organisations. She engages with leaders and organisations worldwide to help them manage competing demands of social impact and financial performance. Marya received a BA in Social Studies, an MA in Sociology, and a PhD in Organisational Behaviour from Harvard University. She also holds an MBA from Stanford University. Her expertise: Social innovation and impact, Hybrid organisations, Organisation theory, Leadership, and Qualitative research methods.


Martin Kalungu-Banda - Senior Advisor, Visiting Fellow, Skoll Centre for Social Enterpreneurship

Martin is a consultant in organisation and leadership development, a facilitator of innovation and change; trainer, coach and author. He is faculty for the Presencing Institute, and for HSBC Next Generation Development, HRH Duke of Edinburgh’s Commonwealth Study Conference for Leaders, and University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership.

Martin works with business, government and civil society leaders globally. He advises the Tony Blair Africa Governance Initiative as thinking partner to Chiefs of Staff and Heads of State, including 3 years as Special Consultant to the President of Zambia. He has led collaborative innovation on diverse issues: Heart surgery costs (India & UK); Sustainable cities (London & Shanghai); Water shortage (Middle East & UK); Carbon emissions (UK & India); and the Coral Triangle tuna industry.

Martin authored Leading Like Madiba: Leadership Lessons from Nelson Mandela (2006), It’s How We End That Matters: Leadership Lessons from an African President (2009), and Driftology: How to Access Life’s Greatest Opportunities by flying on the wings of others (2015). He is qualified in OD and Coaching; and in Public Affairs, Philosophy, Development Studies and Anthropology. He currently lives near Oxford, UK.


Leyla Karaha – Founder, YourY Network

Leyla is the founder of YourY Network, a grassroot community of social entrepreneurs and changemakers. She is a Techstars Community All-Star ‘22, has been the lead organiser for Techstars Startup Weekend Social Innovation Dublin, Techstars Startup Weekend Women Dublin and Techstars Startup Week Dar, Tanzania.  Leyla is also working on founding KPesa, an early-stage social impact crowdfunding platform for female entrepreneurs. She is a Dublin
College University graduate in Accounting and Finance, with experience working for different non-profit organisations in Dublin, Ireland.  She has also studied MA in International Relations in DCU. Leyla is on the board of the Irish Social Enterprise Network.


Dr. Patrick Tolani – CEO Community Energy Social Enterprise Limited

Patrick is the CEO of Community Energy Social Enterprise Limited (CESEL). He is also a Partner at Vale Partners (Barristers & Solicitors). Patrick served as the Executive Director/CEO of the Oxfordshire Equality Human Rights Council, the equality and human rights organization covering Oxfordshire in the United Kingdom. At a time, he had a brief stint with the UNDP Country Office for East Timor as the Principal Adviser for Trade and Development.

He graduated from a postgraduate programme at the Cambridge University on Cross-Sector Partnerships. He holds a degree in Law (LL.B, Hons. 1990) and three Master degrees in three different fields: Law (LL.M 1992 with Best Graduating Student Award); Industrial and Labour Relations (MILR, 1997) and Public Administration (MPA, 2000). He also holds a PhD in Public Management. He is also currently working on another PhD in Project Management at the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Ondo State Nigeria.

Patrick served as the Technical Coordinator for the Ondo State Transition Strategy and Implementation Committee (TSIC) in 2021. He continued to support the state on strategy and partnerships since the committee’s assignment was completed in 2021 and left that role in December 2023. He is one of the leading practitioners in the Renewable energy space in Nigeria. He is a member of the Advisory Board of the Renewable Energy Association of Nigeria (REAN). He is also the Chair of the Duke of Edinburgh Commonwealth Study Conference (CSC), Africa.
