Layah of Layah Designs will host a workshop on how to create a small bag out of shoulder pads. Upcycling is a simple yet vital way to appreciate what we already have in our closets.

Come and join us at one of the many events happening during the Clothes : Minded and Repurposed Art Exhibition by Isabel Varela presented by Chashama!

About Layah

Layah is a teacher, writer, and craft-maker living in Brooklyn, NY. Since 2014 she’s spent her Sundays working at AuH2O Thriftique, a secondhand and vintage shop in the East Village, which inspired her curiosity and commitment to learning about sustainability, slow fashion, and upcycling materials. It was at AuH2O that she began collecting pairs of shoulder pads that were cut out of garments (in favor of a more contemporary aesthetic) with hope of repurposing them into something functional and fun that would also bring awareness to the simple ways we can reduce textile waste. Over the past three years she’s collected hundreds of pairs of shoulder pads and created little handmade pouches. Layah is currently experimenting with reconstructing stained, discarded pillowcases into skirts and upcycling candle holders, cans, and unused kitchenwares into planters. When she's not on the L train, you’ll probably find her wandering around a garden, walking through the woods, or climbing mountains.

About Clothes : Minded and Repurposed Art Exhibition

Clothes: Minded and Repurposed is a follow up to her debut solo art exhibit, Clothes: Minded, which ran in 2018 at the Caelum Gallery in NYC. The event featured Varela’s work alongside like-minded sustainable artists, working together to captivate the reality of wasteful fashion and what we as a community can do to help improve things. Clothes: Minded and Repurposed will build on her 2018 concept, highlighting fashion industry malpractices and taking things a step further by sharing a variety of initiatives people can take to voice their support of a cleaner, more caring, and more responsible future. The exhibit will feature mixed media pieces centered on these concepts, including: three 10-foot sculptures, one 10-foot x 10-foot sculpture, three 60 x 60 inch mixed media works, and three 40 x 40 inch mixed media paintings.

“The art that I create is not just for viewing. It is for the audience to participate in and to be part of the artwork, allowing everyone who enters the doors to leave feeling empowered with a new sustainable activity to implement into their lifestyle,” Varela said.
