Join Long Ago Yukon as we start off the New Year and 4th lecture in the 2024-2025 series with Susan Moorhead Mooney as she recounts the story of the Nantuck Brothers and the history of identifying their remains in the Klondike. In August 1899, Dawson and Jim Nantack were executed in Dawson City, Yukon for the murder of two prospectors. On November 4, 2010, their remains were uncovered by a backhoe operator during construction of a sewage treatment plant.
The current Manager of the Beringia Centre, Susan has over 20 years of experience within heritage and archaeology. Susan's journey began on a NatGeo-sponsored dig on the island of Unalaska, a modern remnant of Beringia in the Aleutian Islands. She then continued her work in the Alaskan subarctic of the Tongass National Forest.
Susan has amassed a wealth of experience across various jurisdictions. She has worked with government agencies, research and academic institutions, First Nations groups, private consulting organizations, public stakeholders, special interest groups, and political representatives.
Passionate about the stories bones tell, Susan has analyzed over 1,100 sets of human remains, revealing the intricate narratives they hold. Her interest also extends to the global movement of megafauna. (www.beringia.com/about/team)
