That's right. Many of the thousands of lawyers who I'm going to be sharing this opportunity with are more concerned about feeling special, than actually being "highly successful".


I keep putting "highly successful" in quotes because it's such an individual and personal measurement. Of-course part of having a "highly successful" law firm is about how much profit the business generates for you. But it's about so much more.


The problem is, we all want to feel special. None of us wants to feel like we've reached the limits of our potential. No matter where you are in your life, it's part of the human spirit to want to believe you are capable of still ever more. And you are!


But then fear kicks-in...




What if I try and I don't live-up to all of my hopes & dreams?

Then I'll have to face the fact that as great as I am, maybe I'm not as great as I imagined myself to be. So better I not even try. Better I allow myself to stay stuck in order to protect my self-image that I'm really actually a very special person who simply has not yet lived up to my potential because of "X".


That used to scare the sh*t out of me. Maybe you can relate.


So I would find very logical excuses for not even trying. Not enough time. Not enough money. Not enough support. Not enough information.


What all of these excuses boil-down to is not enough commitment to risk our self-image in order to get what we really desire in our lives, careers and from our businesses.

This is not a mere issue of semantics. This fundamental misunderstanding about the appropriate relationship for a lawyer to have with his or her law firm is a leading cause of attorney stress and legal career dissatisfaction strife for tens of thousands of experienced and not-so-experienced lawyers in large and small law firms, solo lawyers and even home office lawyers across the United States.


It is a source of liberation for an attorney to understand that there is a difference between the technical legal skills they taught us in law school which prepared us to do the job of helping clients once they have found and hired you

These liberated attorneys can now practice law and make more money with the confidence that comes from knowing that new legal clients will always be on the horizon because the law firm has a system which is not dependent solely on the lawyer's cult of personality or luck.


My fellow attorneys, it is PRECISELY BECAUSE you run a business that must efficiently sell its inventory of available expertise, and deliver those services in a client-friendly way in order to generate a profit for its Owner, that we cannot afford to ignore the practical realities of our legal industry. These are not "ugly" truths, but beautiful ones.
