The J.F. Glidden Homestead & Historical Center is bringing its own version of “Flat Stanley” to DeKalb County this summer, through a cow that inspired Glidden’s barbed wire invention.At 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 2 at the Glidden Homestead, 921 W. Lincoln Highway, families are invited to create their own "Flat Brindle" to have adventures with this summer. Then, at 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 11, return to the Glidden Homestead to share your memories. This program is free and open to families, and is recommended for elementary-level students, but all are welcome.
Brindle is Joseph Glidden’s dairy cow that has been cited as one of the inspirations for creating his “The Winner” barbed wire, which is celebrating the 150th anniversary of its patent this year.
As the story goes, “Ole Brindle” kept knocking down the wood fence to the vegetable and flower gardens. Mrs. Lucinda Glidden was tired of Brindle making a mess of her hard work. A stronger fence was needed. That’s when Mr. Glidden began tinkering with Mrs. Glidden’s hairpins and he came up with the idea that would become his barbed wire. Come to the Homestead on June 2 to hear this story and make your own Flat Brindle, then take your Brindle along on your summer adventures and document the story through photos and words.
