About this Event
This event will launch the findings of the study Gender Equality and Sexual Consent in the Context of Commercial Sexual Exploitation – a collaborative research project conducted by the National Women’s Council and the Sexual Exploitation Research Programme (SERP) at UCD, funded by the Irish Research Council, New Foundations 2020.
Many NWC members participated in this study and we warmly thank them for their insights. A key finding of the project is that participants believe that the commercial sex trade in all its forms is a highly gendered phenomenon and has significant, negative impacts on the achievement of gender equality because of the ways in which it commodifies and exploits women, and vulnerable women in particular. Following the welcome inclusion of measures to address prostitution and sex trafficking within the new Zero Tolerance: Third National Domestic, Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Strategy, this event will also focus on harnessing the potential of the Strategy and creating an engaging discussion with our members on tackling sexual exploitation in all its forms.
This report will build on and inform NWC’s long standing commitment to the Equality Model as the strongest way to challenge commercial sexual exploitation and violence. It will also inform NWC’s overall work on tackling violence against women with our Beyond Exploitation campaign, alongside our partners the Immigrant Council of Ireland and Ruhama.
This report will be launched by Deputy Ivana Bacik TD, Chairperson of the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Gender Equality.
