The Hearth Tax was introduced in England and Wales in 1662 and was repealed in 1689. Householders who paid more than 20 shillings a year in rent had to pay two shillings per year for each hearth in their houses. The returns are an important source for the study of wealth and poverty, population, buildings and family history.
The Hearth Tax Research Project, based at the university of Roehampton, in conjunction with the university of Graz, is making transcriptions of the returns accessible online, in a project entitled Hearth Tax Digital.
The Wiltshire returns of 1662 will be launched on 9th October 2024 at the Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre, Chippenham, between 12:30 and 2:30pm. The launch event will include some information on the background of the project and a chance to look at the online resource, as well as celebrate with some tea and cake!
