During October 18 – December 2, 2024, the NewAlliance Foundation Art Gallery at CT State Community College, Gateway Campus, is proud to present the works of Briana Bess and Cat Balco in a two-person exhibition entitled LATTICE.
This month’s exhibition highlights the artists’ exploration of the written language obscured in mathematical arrangement and cropped script. Bass’s saturated and dense abstractions invite us to dig into their colorful void of the mystical world. These compositions emerge as flickering colors similar to an electronic light show. Counter to the limitless space they invoke, the paintings are created through a meticulous color theory rooted in mathematical harmony. Balco refers to her selections as “Paintings/Writings” which offer a wobbly mirror to Bass’s abstract. By introducing letters in place of Bass’s equations, we are treated to another neon display; however, they are seen in a more intuitive manner. The trompe l'oeil effect of her fragmented letters create a bouncing inner light that craft an illuminated environment. Both artists are showing us, through their distinctive approaches to light and composition, a cross section of intangible things.
