Latino Poetry- Places We Call Home seeks to foster nationwide conversation through a groundbreaking new anthology. As we read the poems and explore the themes within the anthology, we invite you to join us for Palabras y Artesanias (words and crafts) as a form self-expression, on the theme of each event.
PALABRAS/ WORDS
Our second event is on the theme of Language. There are a handful of featured poems to go with the these which can be accessed at this LINK.
Featured Poems:
“Un Beso Is Not a Kiss” by Francisco X. Alarcón

Many Latino poets write in English while retaining strong and vital links with Spanish and Indigenous languages—working in innovative ways with Spanglish, drawing from pre-Hispanic languages such as Nahuatl, or exploring the untranslatable web of connotations of different languages. The group will discuss, what expressive possibilities are opened up in the poems by the interplay of English, Spanish, Spanglish, and other vocabularies?
ARTESANIAS / CRAFTS
"Tenango," derived from the Nahuatl word for "place of walls," refers to its place of origin, but its style and technique are deeply entrenched in Otomí/ hñähñu traditions. The designs, characterized by depictions of animals, plants, and rural life scenes, are not only artistic but also represent the stories, myths, and beliefs of the Otomí/hñähñu people. One's fashions speak before the person has spoken, customize an embroidered design that speaks the language of your stories, myths and beliefs. We will help you transfer the design to your trucker hat, demonstrate the technique and supple an embroidery needle and thread.
