Some of the finest Native rock imagery in the Western Hemisphere is in the Desert Southwest. In this free public lecture presented by the Santa Barbara County Archaeological Society, local rock art enthusiast Chris Rhodes will look at three main styles of rock art that emerged in the Desert Southwest around 4,000 years ago. Over dozens of trips to Utah, New Mexico, and Arizona, Rhodes has photographed and studied hundreds of rock art panels from the middle-to-late archaic periods to the present.We'll see some of the similar motifs and designs, but also regional differences and variations. The artistry and intricacy of these mostly hunter-gatherer cultures is amazing and reveals something other than just the material culture of the people who lived there so long ago.
