About this Event
Las Fotos Project's Sister Circle presents Layers of LA/Ourselves
A collage workshop led by artist Mia Bella Chavez visualizing our sense of home in the city and in our personal lives.

Las Fotos Project's Sister Circle invites you to an evening of collage-making and conversation about our experiences of home with artist and LFP almuna Mia Bella Chavez. In this 2-hour event, we will hear about Mia Bella's process-oriented and intentional collage practice, view several of her works and recent sculptures, learn about tools and techniques for hand-made collages, and engage in a workshop wherein we'll make our own collage representations of home. Taking inspiration from our Spring 2022 Digital Promotoras: Homeland exhibition, we welcome guests to consider the ways in which they experience the City of Los Angeles as a home and how that informs their identity today.

Guests are invited to bring objects, photographs, or other material they would like to incorporate into their collages that act as symbols of home. Las Fotos Project will provide glue, variable paper sizes and colors, and an assortment of magazines for use.

About Mia Bella Chavez

Mia Bella Chavez is an LA based photographer. At the age of 15 she became one of the youngest artists to display work in the Getty Museum. In 2019 she completed visual art courses at California Summer School for the Arts and in Cuba through a study abroad program. Mia Bella was chosen two years in a row to be a guest speaker at the Teen Vogue Summit. In the Fall of 2020 she displayed her first solo show with Las Fotos Project. She continues to study visual art at Loyola Marymount University and currently works as a Photo Assistant for Nike.

In Mia Bella's words...
"I am where I am today as a direct result of the support from art non-profits such as Las Fotos Project, Inner-City Arts, and the Echo Park Film Center. It is important to me to support these programs so that they may continue their work and others can have the experience that I had. I am only beginning to explore the possibilities that a life in the creative economy can offer me but I hope that in doing so, I am able to make young POC aware of the opportunities that exist but more importantly; help young artists realize that they are capable of securing and executing these opportunities themselves."
