Presenters
Raquel Macías Del Valle is a master’s student of Hispanic Literature in the Department of Spanish & Portuguese. She was born and raised in New York City and is the daughter of a proud Puerto Rican mother and Ecuadorian father. Her research interests include Second- and Third-generation Studies, looking at the identity formation of the Chicana, Nuyorican, and Miami-Cuban woman. She loves to learn everything she can about her cultural background and family history. She also likes to dance, travel, and go out for karaoke night whenever possible. Her favorite movie is Jurassic Park, and if the park were open today, she would definitely still go.
Astrid Zussett Urizar Botto is currently pursuing a master's degree in Hispanic literature in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at Brigham Young University. Her research line includes children’s literature and indigenous literature from Guatemala. Astrid also has been working as a co-coordinator with the K’iche’ speaking community in Utah since 2019, offering a K’iche’ language nest for the children of the diaspora K’iche’ in the state, which has cemented her interest in creating bilingual literature (K’iche’-Spanish, K’iche’-English) for those interested in preserving or learning the K’iche’ language. She currently teaches SPAN 311 conversation classes and 102 K’iche’ classes at BYU. She loves traveling and learning about different cultures and perspectives.
Nieves Knapp is a professor in the department of Spanish and Portuguese, working with amazing students such as Astrid and Raquel.
