About the Artists
Nomi Asghar
Nomi Asghar is a visual artist. He grew up in Northern Virginia from a Pakistani family where art and music has always been the cornerstone of his life. After receiving his BFA from Radford University in South Western Virginia he moved to New York City to make art and seek new opportunities. His work is influenced by dreams, science, philosophy, music, the great mystery and anything that generally bewilders the spirit. He works mainly in 2-D mixed media (painting, drawing and collage) and occasionally works digitally as well. His work reflects an internal puzzle and dialogue that is interpreted and and answered through his work; as an exploration of ideas as a layered visual language.
Adam Carpinelli
As a multi-instrumentalist, who plays the guitar, electric bass, drum set and percussion, Adam’s compositions and performances further elevate modern future music by integrating musical genres from Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean with jazz and funk. Over the course of a two decade career, multi-instrumentalist/composer, Adam Carpinelli, has never stopped evolving, reinventing his concept and approach with each new project while constantly honing his voice. Adam is a modernist; he’s comfortable steering ensembles providing the pulse beneath West African Master drummers, hip hop MC’s, progressive jazz and world beat projects.
Caroline Davis
Today, Caroline’s music covers a wide range of styles, owed to this shifting environment. As a leader, she has released seven albums: Live Work & Play (2012), Doors: Chicago Storylines (2015), Heart Tonic (2018), Alula (2019), Anthems (2019), Portals: Mourning (2021), and Alula: Captivity (2023). Her active projects include jazz-leaning Portals, experimental R&B outfit My Tree, and protest band Alula. She has won Downbeat’s Critic’s Poll Rising Star Alto-Saxophonist (2018) and has been included in numerous Reader and Critics Polls. Her work has garnered much praise from NPR, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Wire, DownBeat, and many international publications. Davis is active as both a side-person and a leader in a diverse set of expressions. Davis has shared the stage with Lee Konitz, Rajna Swaminathan, Michelle Boulé, Angelica Sanchez, John Zorn, Bari Kim, The Femme Jam, Matt Mitchell, Terry Riley, Miles Okazaki, and Billy Kaye.
Owen Evans
Owen Evans is an emerging voice in the jazz world, captivating audiences with his innovative sound and musicianship. Drawing inspiration from jazz luminaries Evans seamlessly melds traditional jazz elements with contemporary influences, creating a distinctive style that resonates with both purists and modern listeners alike. Evans recently finished his masters degree in jazz performance at Portland State University where he studied under George Colligan, Darrell Grant, and Tim Wilcox. He is set to release his anticipated debut album, One Way Passage, later this year which promises to showcase his unique artistry and innovative compositions. This album is not just a collection of tracks; it’s a sonic journey that reflects Evans' experiences, and artistic vision.
Michael Galen
Michael Galen is a versatile musician, composer, and dancer whose work is deeply influenced by global rhythms and melodies. With a diverse background that includes studying in Ghana, Brazil, Cuba, and Senegal, Michael has honed his skills under notable teachers and has extensive experience as a musical director. He has performed and recorded with various bands, showcasing his talent on keyboards, drum set, and percussion. Michael's connection to dance informs his musical expression, and he regularly collaborates with Rejoice diaspora dance theater as a composer, producer, performer, and choreographer.
David Kim
David Kim was born and raised in Portland, Oregon and began his musical studies at age 10. As first place winner of the Oregon Symphony's Corbett Competition, he was featured as a soloist performing Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 1. David discovered jass while attending the renowned Interlochen Arts Academy in Northern Michigan. He subsequently went on to study classical music at the Moores School of Music, University of Houston. Since then, David has been passionate about jazz and continues to compose music and perform within the Portland area.
