Calling all creative families (or adults)! Make your very own garden bird or starling lantern for our WildLights lantern trail! On Friday 28th Feb and Saturday 1st March, our #WildLightsLanternTrail will take over RSPB Old Moor nature reserve in a beautiful twilight trail of lanterns, lit puppets and wildlife sculptures, crafts and activities and campfires.
You can get involved and make a lantern for the trail, come and see your lantern (your workshop ticket includes 20% off tickets to WildLights for everyone who came to the workshop!*) and then collect your lantern to take home after the events.
Our lantern workshops are 2.5 hours long and are suitable for absolute beginners. You will receive all the materials you need to make a lantern up to 1m long from willow and tape to make the frame, then paper and PVA to cover the lantern and decorate it to make yours unique to you! The glue is washable but you might not want to wear your best clothes. Instructions and help will be on hand from Old Moor volunteers.
One family ticket is to make 1 lantern. Each ticket will be using one table- about 5ft, so we recommend a maximum of 2-3 adults just in terms of space. If you would like to make another lantern, please buy an additional lantern ticket. Adults interested in making a lantern are most welcome too- you don't need to have children with you!
Why not make a day of it? You can explore RSPB Old Moor before or after your workshop, with The Lookout for families and our new Wild Play areas (reserve entry applies for non-members).
We'll then keep your lantern(s) safe until WildLights where you can spot them amongst lots of others made by people in your community and Old Moor Creative volunteers. After the events, the lantern is yours to take home: if you come to the last WildLights event (1st March), your lantern can be collected from 8pm or collect it from Old Moor before April 15th when they will be recycled.
The lantern workshops at Old Moor are just £10 for a family who are RSPB members and £12 for a non-member family. This includes all materials and instruction to make your lantern at a 2.5 hour workshop and 20% off tickets for one of the WildLights events for everyone on the workshop.
There's four workshops with space for 8 families at each session.

More about Old Moor:
RSPB Old Moor is South Yorkshire’s best kept secret: a place to spot some wonderful nature, explore and discover with the kids or just walk around in peace and quiet. There’s lots to do as a family with our new sensory garden, our playground, wild play areas and pond dipping (Easter to October). Or, discover a hidden gem away from the hustle and bustle to enjoy nature and take a breather; you could even try our Natural Wellbeing trail. Stop off at the café for hot food, cake and enjoy a hot drink with a view on our balcony with stunning views across the reserve. Our shop sells a fantastic range of gifts for all ages, wrapping paper and cards and wildlife care products so you can create a nature haven in your own outdoor space and join us in giving nature a home.
Car parking is free.
Accessibility: Old Moor is on the Trans-Pennine Trail so is very accessible locally via foot or bike. Our paths are wheelchair and pushchair friendly and we have mobility scooters available to pre-book for your visit. We have accessible toilets and baby changing facilities. Dogs are welcome in the courtyard but not on the reserve itself.
