RESCHEDULED TO JUNE15th 7pm
VIRTUAL on ZOOM
If you are searching for answers about the Russia-Ukraine war and how was it made possible, this brilliant talk is just for you. Please join us June 11th! The talk will be in English!
According to recent results from state-controlled pollsters WCIOM, 71% of respondents supported Russia’s “special military operation”.
Officially, they call it “a special operation”, because those who use the words “war” and “invasion,” can now face 15 years in prison. The words have been playing a significant role in legitimizing the war and making it acceptable for the society. Since 2014, the entire Ukraine-related vocabulary has been created in Russian media ("Nazi hunta,” "punishers" (karateli). Hate speech — both visual and verbal — has become a tool of Russian hybrid warfare.
Ksenia Turkova is an international journalist, linguist (PhD in philology), and educator. For over 20 years, Ksenia has been a news anchor for radio and TV shows around the world, ranging from NTV, REN TV and Echo of Moscow in Russia to Hromadske TV in Ukraine. Ksenia currently works as a broadcast journalist for the Russian service of Voice of America in the United States. She is a guest lecturer at the University of Maryland and the University of Arizona. Ksenia is a member of the expert council of the Russian “Word Of The Year” contest.
