In this class students will be introduced to a variety of aspects of plein air painting such as seeing color and shapes in life versus copying from a photo, creating a design and a pleasing composition, seeing values and rendering them accurately, and learning how to mix colors on the palette and canvas according to principles of design and color.

Materials will be at the Arts Center for each class. You will be responsible to meet in the locations listed for that day of class.
Materials: All participants are encouraged to bring a small sketchbook and pencil. More experienced participants are welcome to bring their own preferred supplies/plein air setup. For those beginning to explore the artform or who may not have their own supplies, basic paint supplies, brushes, and small canvases will be on hand during this workshop as well. If you are bringing your own supplies, our instructor recommends an easel or pochade box and tripod, a set of paints of your choice, panels or small canvas, paper towels, solvents, and a small sketchbook with pen or pencil. And of course, a hat, water, and sunscreen as these classes will be held outside. A large component of the plein air experience is mostly about learning how to see and design a composition and values in rapidly changing light; in any medium (oil, pastel, acrylic, colored pencil, watercolor). The instructor's personal medium of choice is water-soluble oil paints but you are welcome to bring any medium you would like to work in.
