Course Overview:This 1-day class will use a combination of classroom instruction and practical field application. Graduates will understand topographic map reading and land navigation techniques. Classroom topics are reinforced and practiced with practical field exercises. Participants will leave confident in map reading, compass navigation, and online resources/apps for both paper and digital maps.
Outline:
- Map datums and marginal information
- Map terrain features
- Grid plotting, azimuth, bearing, and route planning
- Compass and pace count
- Navigation using dead reckoning and terrain association techniques
- Online and App resources
Lunch is provided.
Prerequisites: Ability to walk long distances over uneven terrain.
Gear List
Mandatory:
- Quality lensatic compass, such as Suunto M-3 or Cammenga 3H military lensatic compass, or other.
- Map Protractor w/1:25000 scale, we have some for sale on-site.
- Mechanical pencil with eraser.
- Paper for taking notes.
- Hiking shoes/boots.
- Clothing suitable for indoor/outdoor training.
- Snacks and beverages.
Recommended:
- Paper map copies supporting classroom and field exercises will be provided. If you would like a complete map, a link will be provided to on-line resource where you can order one prior to class.
- Two-way radio for safety comms.
- Pace count beads.
- Small backpack for carrying water and navigation equipment.
