Dans Zomia Garden, Lin retrace l’héritage de l’exploration botanique dans une région de la chaîne de montagnes Himalaya-Hengduan connue sous le nom de Zomia, un terme introduit en 2002 pour désigner la plus grande région d’habitants non gouvernée par un État-nation. Les topographies variables de l’Himalaya abritent une variété extraordinaire de flore et de faune et, au fil des ans, ont inspiré des imaginaires mythiques de terres généreuses. Lin, artiste et conservateur, est retourné dans la région - sa ville natale - pour retracer les voyages de Joseph F. Rock, un célèbre chasseur de plantes des années 1920, dont l’approche de la botanique, du paysage et de la culture a été transformée par ses rencontres avec des guides indigènes Nakhi, leur langue et leurs rituels. En juxtaposant ses photographies et leurs itinéraires à ceux de Rock, Lin démêle les histoires du colonialisme, de la création de mythes et de la résistance tissées dans la chasse aux espèces végétales rares et au savoir botanique.

Le livre est le résultat de la participation de Lin à notre programme pour commissaires emergents, dont la mission est d’orienter les approches curatoriales du CCA vers des territoires inexplorés.

Pour l’occasion, Yutong Lin et Yan Zhou discuteront de l’histoire botanique et coloniale de la région de Zomia, ainsi que de l’approche archivistique, artistique, éditoriale de Lin. La discussion sera animée par Victoria Addona, Rédactrice, Publications CCA.

Please join us for a conversation around Zomia Garden, our latest CCA Single, with our 2023–2024 Emerging Curator Yutong Lin and invited cross-disciplinary scholar Yan Zhou.

In Zomia Garden, Lin traces the legacy of botanical exploration in an area of the Himalaya-Hengduan Mountain chain known as Zomia, a term coined in 2002 to refer to the largest region of inhabitants not governed by a nation-state. The variable Himalayan topographies sustain an extraordinary variety of flora and fauna and, over the years, have inspired mythical imaginaries of bountiful lands. Lin, an artist and curator, returned to the region—her hometown—to retrace the travels of Joseph F. Rock, a famous plant hunter in the 1920s whose approach to botany, landscape, and culture was transformed by his encounters with Indigenous Nakhi guides and their language and rituals. Juxtaposing her photographs and itinerary alongside Rock’s, Lin untangles the histories of colonialism, mythmaking, and resistance woven into the hunt for rare plant species and botanical knowledge.

The book is a result of Lin’s participation in the CCA Emerging Curator program, which aims to take the institution’s curatorial work into unexplored territories.

On this occasion, Yutong Lin and Yan Zhou will discuss botanical and colonial histories in the Zomia region as well as Lin’s intersecting archival, artistic, and editorial approach. The discussion will be moderated by Victoria Addona, Editor, CCA Publications.
