4-H Lancaster County Birding Project – Participant Expectations

The 4-H Lancaster County Birding Project is designed to get youth outdoors, learning about birds, and developing an interest in natural resources through hands-on experiences and interactive learning.


Eligibility
  • Open to youth ages 9–18 (we encourage family participation)
  • Open to youth from Lancaster, Kershaw, Lee, York, Chester, Chesterfield, and Fairfield Counties... Youth from other counties may participate but most field days will be near the counties listed here.
  • Project kickoff: March 2026

Virtual Meetings (Zoom)

All Zoom meetings are interactive and held in the evening.

Participants are expected to attend at least 3 of the 5 Zoom meetings. Each Zoom will be interactive and recorded:

  • March 24, 2026 at 7:00 PM – Kickoff Zoom
  • May 19, 2026 at 7:00 PM
  • June 23, 2026 at 7:00 PM
  • August 18, 2026 at 7:00 PM
  • November 17, 2026 at 7:00 PM (Final Zoom)

In-Person Field Days (Family participation is encouraged)

Participants are expected to attend at least 3 of the 7 total field day opportunities.

  • April–May 2026: Three field day options focusing on spring migration
    (Dates and locations to be determined)
  • July 24, 2026 (morning): Tentative summer field day
  • Mid September–October 2026: Three fall field day options focusing on Fall Migration
    (Dates and locations to be determined)

Field days will rotate among different locations across the region to provide a variety of birding experiences. Potential locations are Landsford Canal State Park (Chester), Andrew Jackson State Park (Lancaster), Carolina Sandhills National Wildlife Refuge (Chesterfield), Anne Springs Close Greenway (York), Nature is Teacher (Kershaw), and others.


Participation & Tracking
  • There is no required project book
  • Youth are expected to track their birding experiences and progress
  • Tracking options (paper, digital, and app-based) will be shared during the kickoff Zoom

General Expectations
  • Actively participate in meetings and field days
  • Be respectful of wildlife, habitats, and fellow participants
  • Come prepared to learn, explore, and enjoy time outdoors

Program Goal

The goal of this project is to get youth outside, build birding skills, and spark a long-term interest in natural resources and conservation in a fun, flexible, and supportive 4-H environment.

Who can participate?

4-H members, ages 9-18, may register for the club. 4-H membership is required. If not already a member for this project year, membership enrollment can be completed online. New members may enroll in 4-H here: https://v2.4honline.com/
