Aotearoa composer Leonie Holmes wrote Ancient Rhythms twenty years ago, inspired by the poem The Journey by Tessa Stephens. The last time CSO performed it the reviewer said “it had genuine expressive appeal… rhythms, textures and sonorities that seemed to awaken our animal instincts, and we responded accordingly.”NZSO Principal Flute Bridget Douglas joins CSO as soloist for Mozart's Flute Concerto No. 2 in D Major. This exquisite concerto showcases elegance, lyrical melodies, and technical brilliance, perfectly suited to Bridget's exceptional musicianship.
Tchaikovsky’s fifth symphony takes us back in time, while simultaneously showing us how timeless the great symphonic works can be – the epitome of a blockbuster symphony that shows off all sections of the orchestra. This is a masterwork for lifetime symphonic fans and newcomers to the orchestra alike; you can’t help but be swept away.
