The Lafayette Trail, Inc. is pleased to announce the upcoming unveiling of a new Lafayette Trail marker to be installed in Wheeling, West Virginia, on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, at 1:30 pm ET.This program will be conducted in collaboration with the Wheeling and Woodburn chapters National Society Daughters of the American Revolution. The ceremony will be dedicated to the memory of Debi Smith, a member of the Wheeling Chapter NSDAR who passed away earlier this year.
Mrs. Smith's unwavering dedication to this project was central to Wheeling's admission to the national Lafayette Trail. It is only fitting that this function serve as a tribute to Mrs. Smith's commitment to preserving Wheeling's history and Franco-American relations in her home state.
The event will be held on Wednesday, September, 25 at 1:30 pm ET at Wheeling's iconic Heritage Port (Water St, Wheeling, WV 26003), right on the banks of the Ohio River. Street parking will be available on-site and along the streets adjacent to the park. The ceremony is expected to last approximately 45 minutes. It will include remarks from all stakeholders involved in the preparation of the monument, the marker unveiling, and photo opportunities. The historic marker is provided by The Lafayette Trail, Inc. with funding from the William G. Pomeroy Foundation. This event is free and open to the public.
We hope that you will be able to join us for this historic occasion honoring both the contributions of General Lafayette to the independence of the United States of America and the memory of Debi Smith.
