Lafayette Bicentennial Footsteps Bus Tour & Luncheon

Please join us as we welcome Major General Lafayette in his Bicentennial Return to Baltimore!

Footstep Tour by Bus of Baltimore Venues Visited by Lafayette

Starts at 610 Park Avenue Baltimore, Maryland 8:45 AM – 12:15 PM

Continue the journey of Lafayette’s 1824 itinerary by taking a ticketed motor coach tour of 7 venues

connected to Lafayette’s visit. Enjoy the living history description of these sites by popular Baltimore

Heritage Tour Guide Bradley Alston. Beginning and ending at the Maryland Center for History and

Culture (MCHC) enjoy this 3-hour coach bus tour to see where Lafayette received an honorary

degree at Davidge Hall and learn about his relationship to Edgar Allan Poe’s family on the University of Maryland/Baltimore campus. (Note: Attendees will travel by foot for 2 blocks between these two venues; refreshments will be provided). Re-board the motor coach and travel to the east side of 19th century Baltimore to see where he visited museums and churches built in the early 1800s sumptuously dined at a prominent Baltimore citizen’s town home and toured the initial construction of the first-ever monument to his “adopted” father at the Washington Monument at Mount Vernon Place.

Speaker Luncheon with Prof. Richard Bell University of MD Historian and MCHC

Lafayette Farewell Tour Artifact Exhibit

619 Park Avenue Baltimore Maryland 12:30 PM – 4:00 PM

At the conclusion of the guided footstep tour by bus the American Friends of Lafayette will host a

ticketed speaker luncheon at the MCHC closed to the public that date. Enjoy a catered gourmet box

lunch and hear noted University of Maryland historian Dr Richard Bell author of “Stolen: Five Free Boys Kidnapped into Slavery and Their Astonishing Odyssey Home”. Professor Bell’s lecture will focus on the progressive social views Lafayette dearly held and be followed by a Q&A session. Before and after Professor Bell’s lecture peruse American Friends of Lafayette traveling panels on display in the MCHC entrance area to learn the essential story of Lafayette’s life and legacy. And explore a special curated exhibit of souvenirs and artifacts from Lafayette’s 1824 -1825 Farewell Tour that are part of MCHC’s archived collection. The creation of a “souvenir market” was one of the lasting influences of Lafayette’s 13-month Farewell Tour!

Guests will enjoy a 15% discount by booking a combined bus tour + speaker luncheon ticket package on October 8th.

Join scores of AFL members, regional history buffs, and French and American dignitaries to be part of 21st century Baltimore history. Visit unique locations seen by Lafayette 200 years ago to partake in music, parades, historic footstep tours, an award-winning author speaker luncheon, musical theater, and a farewell party.
