Lady CT presents Virginia Hamilton's prize-winning African American folktale, The People Could Fly, a story about resiliency and triumph!
About this Event

A long time ago in Africa, the people could fly...so begins the title story in Virginia Hamilton's prize-winning American Black folktale anthology. Virginia Hamilton grew up listening to her parents, grandparents and others tell stories of their past. She since realized that "they were passing along heritage and culture and a pride in their history."

The story, in which an old man, tired of the abuse he and others are suffering under the violence of slavery, reclaims his people's magic and power and helps them to liberate themselves. It introduces students to the remarkable power of those who escaped the horrible conditions of slavery. Despite the hardships they faced, enslaved people held on to a sense of community and tradition. They passed on stories, folk tales and legends from generation to generation.

This is a story about the triumph of the human spirit and the fight for freedom! The story celebrates the resiliency of enslaved people and honors the significance of the spirituality and mysticism of Black communities in times of great injustice and uncertainty.

What is hope? Why do we need it? Where can we find it? How can we give hope to others? Explore the answers to these profoundly important questions.

What if I don't know how many will be attending on the day of the event?

Register the combined number of students, teachers and chaperones that are most likely to attend the event. Three weeks prior to the event, we will contact you to confirm your group's final attendance.

While we understand that unexpected emergencies may arise, we kindly ask that should you have to cancel, please give us at least two weeks’ notice so we can make the tickets available to other individuals, groups or those who are on the waitlist.

Can homeschool households and co-ops register as a group or school?

No. All requests that do not meet eligibility will be canceled.

Why is my order quantity being rejected?

Each ticket type has been allocated a preset quantity. All tickets requests are pulled from the total tickets available. Regardless of the type of tickets being requested, when the total amount distributed reaches capacity, tickets will no longer be distributed.

Can I register other than online?

Groups larger than 100 can register by phone, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Call 210-207-7211 for assistance.

Can I update my registration information?

Yes, you may update your registration information online up to the sales end date, or thereafter by contacting the Carver Box Office: 210-207-2719.

Tickets and Seating

Is there a ticket for each person?

All orders are Will Call registrations. We do not issue printed tickets. You will be required to check-in upon arrival. You will need to confirm the number of people in your group at check-in.

Is there reserved seating?

The Carver will determine available seating locations for all matinees. All tickets are General Admission so you are technically being given access to one seat in the theatre with no guarantee where it will be located. Seating is typically on a first-come, first-seated basis with seating filled front to back, based upon your arrival; however, we reserve the right to designate group seating sections.

We ordered tickets individually but we want to sit together. Can we do that?

We do not guarantee that space will be able for you to sit in a group. If you are meeting others at the venue and wish to sit together, please arrive early and request to be seated only after all guests in your party are present.

How do we change our ticket quantity?

• Additional tickets. If you require more tickets and they are still available, place another order online. If the performance is sold out, we are not able to fulfill your request.

• Fewer tickets. If your original order needs change by a decrease of 10 or more tickets, call the Box Office for assistance, 210-207-2234.

Attendance Confirmation

Group Reservations. All registered attendees will be contacted three weeks prior to the matinee. You must confirm your registration, administration authorization for the trip, and confirm scheduled transportation or your reservation will be cancelled and your tickets will be released.

All others. You will receive an RSVP by email to confirm your attendance.

No-shows, No call-ins (Schools, Youth Groups)

The absence of a large group tremendously impacts our performances. In the event you confirmed your attendance but did not advise us of your cancellation with at least two weeks’ notice, further reservations for the season may be cancelled and you may not be able to place new reservations or reorder. Thank you in advance for your courteousness and understanding.

Reservations, Cancelling

How do we cancel our reservation?

You can cancel your reservation using your Eventbrite Confirmation Order number or call the Box Office for assistance, 210-207-2234.

Parking and Unloading

View map

We strongly advise our guests to use Nolan, Iowa or Montana Streets which offer railway overpasses or underpasses. If you are coming from the Downtown area or I-37 , Commerce and Houston Street traffic is frequently blocked by trains. Plan wisely.

Buses. If arriving by bus, buses may unload passengers on Hackberry Street in front of the Carver Center. After unloading, drivers may proceed north on Hackberry to park, or west on Mesquite and Swiss Streets. Do not park in the Brackenridge Learning Center or Taylor Mortuary lots.

Personal Vehicle: Individuals arriving by vehicle may park free at 215 N. Hackberry, in our Center St. lot, located behind the theatre or on any available side streets. The streets are not metered.

Senior Center Vans and Handicapped Parking. Seniors and handicapped individuals should unload on Center Street, just north of the theatre, where an ADA ramp is conveniently located. Using the side entrance also reduces the number of stairs required to enter the facility. After unloading, drivers may park in our Center Street lot, located behind the theatre, which offers designated Handicapped Parking spaces.

Travel Reimbursement (Schools, Youth Groups)

Do you offer transportation assistance for schools?

Yes, transportation funds are available for public, charter and private schools and non-profit youth organizations with conditions:

• Your school group must have at least 25 attendees at the event.

• Reimbursements are capped at $125 per bus/driver and will not exceed actual invoice expense.
