About this Event

The Invisible Dog is thrilled to welcome Layla Klinger for a large scale lacemaking demonstration as well as Katherine Fox-Glassman and her daughter for a bobbin lacemaking demonstration.

Join artist Layla Klinger for a demonstration of large-scale lacemaking and explore the possibilities of bobbin lace structure. Through her artistic practice, Layla has developed a unique system of applying unconventional materials to bobbin lacemaking. In this demonstration, they will interlace wires to work variations on traditional patterns from Uta Ulrich’s book “Gründe Mit System”. Visitors are welcome to ask questions, try their hand at the craft, or simply observe.

Layla Klinger is an interdisciplinary artist and educator based in Brooklyn. Her primary focus is the intersection of lace-making, technology and queer spaces. Her works have been presented globally, including at Mana Contemporary, Urban Zen Foundation, the Fiberart International Biennale, and a solo show at Rosenfeld Gallery (2020). She created site-specific installations for the Little Island Festival (Greece), the New York Public Library, FRATZ Festival (Berlin) and Nightlight Festival (Tel Aviv). She earned her MFA in Textiles from Parsons School of Design in 2021, where she is currently an adjunct faculty member.

Katherine Fox-Glassman discovered bobbin lacemaking when she was 10. What was supposed to be a quick glance at a lace demonstration in Bruges turned into a multiple-decade-long exploration of lacemaking techniques. She loves the airy geometry of Torchon, Bucks, and Flanders styles, as well as the floral not-quite-chaos of early Binche designs. When not tossing bobbins around, Katherine can be found knitting, crocheting, spinning and weaving, embroidering, beading, and sewing unnecessarily elaborate Halloween costumes. Her daughter, who took up lacemaking at 7, is currently experimenting with color and texture in a variety of Torchon stitches.
