Laban: The Filipino American ExperienceThursday, October 17, 3:00 PM – 7:00 PM
FREE for Third Thursdays
Join us at the Washington State History Museum to celebrate Filipino American History Month. In Filipino, the word “laban” means “to fight.” This community event will explore the Filipino fighting spirit and its contributions to American history. It will feature community organizations, vendors, performances, food, and a panel discussion highlighting Filipino American heritage and history.
Schedule of Events
3:00 to 7:00 PM - Tabling with vendors and community organizations on 3rd and 4th floor
3:00 to 7:00 PM - Food sampling on the 4th floor mezzanine while supplies last
3:00 PM - Documentary screenings of Honor Thy Mother: The Untold Story of Aboriginal Women and their Indipino Children (31 min) by Lucy Ostrander and Gina Corpuz and Off the Farm (13 min) by Mauro Basa on the 5th floor
4:00 to 5:00 PM - Cultural demonstrations on the 5th floor
5:30 PM - Procession to the auditorium on the 2nd floor for presentation of flags and performance of Bayan Ko
5:45 PM - Panel discussion on Filipino American women's fight for advancement in professional fields
6:45 PM - Musical performances
7:00 PM - Closing Remarks
This program is curated by the Filipino American National Historical Society Greater Puget Sound Chapter. FANHS-GPS is dedicated to curating Filipino American narratives and providing platforms for Filipino Americans in our state to share their histories.
