Volunteers will engage in hands-on activities, including:
🌿 Removing invasive plant species (led by Friends of the LA River)
🌱 Caring for and planting native plants (led by LA/Santa Monica Chapter - California Native Plant Society)

Why Participate?

By volunteering, you’ll help restore the Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve, a vital sanctuary for migratory birds, mammals, amphibians, and pollinators along the Pacific Flyway. This urban oasis supports biodiversity, improves water quality and climate resilience, and serves as a key entry point to the Los Angeles River.

Thanks to ongoing restoration efforts, the basin has seen a reduction in invasive species and improved fire resilience, but continued work is essential to ensure long-term ecosystem health. Invasive plants still threaten native vegetation, reducing food sources and shelter for wildlife, while recent wildfires have weakened the landscape, increasing erosion and habitat loss.

The Donald C. Tillman Water Reclamation Plant, located nearby, feeds the basin with treated water, helping sustain its wetlands. However, when invasive species take over, they disrupt the basin’s ability to filter water, support wildlife, and maintain a healthy connection to the LA River. By removing invasive plants and planting native species, volunteers help protect this fragile ecosystem, improve soil and water retention, and strengthen the basin’s defenses against climate change.

This effort reflects Dr. Jane Goodall’s vision of youth-led conservation and action through Roots & Shoots, empowering people to restore habitats, build climate resilience, and create lasting change in their communities.
