Italo-Britannici: Italian Expats in London of the Early 18th Century

Italo-Britannici is a musical portrait of Italian-born instrumentalist-composers such as Barsanti, Matteis, Draghi, and Cervetto who emigrated to London in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Attracted by the manifold opportunities the vibrant metropolis on the Thames had to offer, they wrote music that reflected England's - and especially London's - ever-changing musical tastes. Their music also revealed their drive to become an integral part of local culture and to contribute to its shaping. Several pieces selected for this program display the composers' intimate knowledge of the Italian style. Another is written in the sophisticated style of the French Baroque. And others delve into the joyous possibilities of the theme and variation form of the ever-popular English Ground, Scotch humour included. Given the rich mix of musical traditions at play here, how could it be otherwise?
As part of Philadelphia's vibrant early music scene, La Bernardinia Baroque Ensemble specializes in chamber music from 1600-1750 presenting engaging programs of repertory from France, Germany, Italy, and England. Performing on copies of period instruments, the core ensemble consists of Rainer Beckmann, recorder; Donna Fournier, viola da gamba; and Marcia Kravis, harpsichord. The group's name refers to the title of a piece by Italian composer Girolamo Frescobaldi that La Bernardinia performed on their debut program.
Music at Friends musicatfriends.org is a diverse concert series hosted and sponsored by the Woodstown Friends Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers). Our mission is to bring quality musical performances to our area while utilizing the beautiful setting and fine acoustics of our historic meetinghouse.
The Music at Friends concert series is made possible in part by funds from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts, through the Salem County Board of Chosen Commissioners, and Salem County Cultural and Heritage Commission. Sponsors also include Schonstedt Instrument Company, the Woodstown Monthly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) and individual donors.
The concert will be held at the Woodstown Friends Meetinghouse, 104 North Main Street in Woodstown, NJ. Admission is free, although donations are accepted. An artist reception and complimentary refreshments will be provided at the close of the concert. Ample free parking is available at the meetinghouse.
