Immediate Life Support (ILS) training is a comprehensive, practical course designed to equip healthcare professionals with the skills and knowledge necessary to provide prompt and effective care during life-threatening medical emergencies. The training focuses on early recognition and intervention in critical situations, emphasising the importance of teamwork and effective communication. Successful completion can be used as required annual update evidence for those holding a FREC4 qualification.
Objectives:
To understand the principles of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and how to perform it effectively.
To recognise and manage respiratory arrest.
To identify and treat life-threatening arrhythmias.
To demonstrate the safe and effective use of defibrillators.
To enhance skills in basic airway management and ventilation.
To develop strategies for the rapid assessment and management of critically ill patients.
Course Content:
Introduction to ILS:
Overview of ILS principles.
Importance of early intervention and teamwork.
Basic Life Support (BLS) Refresher:
Adult, child, and infant CPR techniques.
Use of automated external defibrillators (AED).
Airway Management:
Techniques for opening and maintaining the airway.
Use of airway adjuncts (e.g., oropharyngeal airways, supraglottic airways).
Recognition and Initial Management of Cardiac Arrest:
Identification of cardiac arrest and immediate response.
High-quality chest compressions and rescue breathing.
Defibrillation and Rhythm Recognition:
Indications for defibrillation.
Safe operation of manual and automated defibrillators.
Recognition and treatment of shockable and non-shockable rhythms.
Management of Life-Threatening Arrhythmias:
Identification and initial management of common arrhythmias.
Pharmacological interventions and electrical therapy.
Post-Resuscitation Care:
Stabilisation and transfer to higher levels of care.
Monitoring and management of the post-arrest patient.
Simulated Practice Scenarios:
Hands-on practice in simulated emergency situations.
Emphasis on teamwork, communication, and leadership skills.
Assessment:
Participants are assessed through continuous observation during practical sessions and a formal evaluation at the end of the course. Successful completion is based on demonstrated competence in core ILS skills and knowledge.
Target Audience:
ILS training is designed for healthcare professionals who may encounter medical emergencies in their work, including doctors, nurses, paramedics, and other allied health professionals. It is also suitable for medical students and other individuals involved in patient care.
Duration:
The ILS course spans one day combining theoretical instruction with practical hands-on training.
Certification:
Upon successful completion of the course, participants receive a certification in Immediate Life Support, valid for 1 year, after which refresher training is recommended.
