Lynette Cruz, Kaheleonolani Dukelow, Walter Ritte, and Tammy Smith discuss the challenges, strategies, and victories embedded in the customary practices of kapu, mālama, and aloha as a means to protect, sustain, and empower Kanaka ‘Ōiwi communities.

Moderated by Mehanaokalā Hind.
About the panelists
Lynette Cruz is a public school graduate and retired university professor. She lives in Waiʻanae and continues to be actively involved in community organizing and advocating for the truth of history.

Kaheleonolani Dukelow was born and raised on the island of Maui and presently resides there in Waiohuli. She started her career in education as a kumu in Kula Kaiapuni and has spent the last 20 years teaching Hawaiian Studies and language at the University of Hawaiʻi Maui College. Kahele is committed to building lāhui through Hawaiian education, language, history, culture, politics and kuleana.

Walter Ritte has been a pillar of activism in Hawai'i since the 1970s when he and eight other Aloha ʻĀina were called to Kahoʻolawe to protect her from military occupation and abuse. He is a lifelong champion of environmental justice, food security, native rights, and Hawaiian independence. In 2017, he founded ʻĀina Momona, a Hawaiian led organization dedicated to ahupuaʻa restoration, social justice, and sovereignty based at Keawanui Fishpond. He lives on Molokaʻi with his wife Loretta and their ʻohana.
Tammy Smithʻs passion is to serve our Lāhui. To preserve our Mea ‘Ai Hawaiʻi and share our genealogy through food. Working with and supporting our Kalo and other indigenous crops. Always willing to kōkua in every way I can.

Mehanaokala Hind is a Kumu Hula and cultural practitioner skilled in hula and oli. She descends from the hula lineage of Kumu Hula Leinaʻala Kalama Heine and earned the rank of Kumu Hula in 2009 when she completed the ‘ūniki rites set forth by her Kumu. She has been trained in mele oli from some of Hawaiʻiʻs master chanters. Mehana brings a breadth and depth of relationships with Native Hawaiian communities, leaders, schools and organizations that is hard to match. She is the Senior Advisor to the CEO at the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement.
