Kunene Camino July 2024 - 155 km on foot adventure

The Kunene Camino is a 12-day Camino with 1 day travel to and 2 days from the Kunene 9 days of walking.

We will walk from below Ruacana Falls to Epupa Falls along the Swartbooisdrift Road. There are goat tracks along the river you can also walk. It is a total of 155 km.

The Kunene Camino is a mobile camping Camino. This Camino is a mix of formal campsites and wild camping next to the river. All our camp spots are supporting the local communities.

For bush-bathroom facilities we erect a canvas cubicle for shower hour and the same for our toilet. You will have total privacy.

The backup team will take care of all camp duties. So you do not need to put up or take down your tent do any cooking or dishes or any camp chores. You carry only your day bag when walking.

We cater for Herbivores and Carnivores and our food is made with love.

It will be 9 days of walking: average +/- 17 km per day.

We include the transport from Windhoek to Ruacana and from Epupa Falls to Windhoek (3 days of traveling up and down).

We also do a charity drive to collect staple food for the local Himba people. We will hand it out along the way.

The Kunene region is one of fourteen regions in Namibia. It is 115000km² and has a population of around 90000 people. The Capital is Opuwo and amazingly the region has a population density of only one person per 0.75 km². Compare that with Hong Kong which has a density of 7125 people per 1 km².

The Kunene River in Northern Namibia or Cunene River in Southern Angola is 1050 km long and starts in the highlands of Angola.

Our walk will be following this river from the Ruacana Falls to the Epupa Falls.

There are a lot of indigenous OvaHimba and OvaVimba people along the river (approx. 50000) but they keep mostly to themselves. They populate the southern part of Angola and the Kunene formerly Koakoveld.

The Vimba and the Himba share much in common however the Vimba wear a different type of traditional dress and the women do not cover their skin and hair with a paste of butter fat and red ochre known as otjize to their skin and hair. They form part of the Bantu speaking tribes and are semi-nomadic. They have homesteads where they grow crops but often move with the rains.
