Our Blood is Sacred
Imagine a world where girls grow up KNOWING that their blood is sacred.
Each year from their first, they witness ceremony in which women are celebrated for being bleeding women, honoured, witnessed in their value as a cyclical woman.
And then when their own menarche happens, they are able to be held in this rite of passage by a loving community and the wisdom of their elders.
How can we make this happen?
The change, of course, starts with us.
We need to do our own work first. We need to reimagine our own menarche, reclaim our womb and our blood – witnessed by our community.
We need to CELEBRATE our own bleed – actively and passionately and we need to do this IN COMMUNITY.
Menarche Ceremonies
For the past few years we have been holding menarche ceremonies for adult women around Imbolc for these women to reimagine and reimprint their experience of their first bleed.
This fundamental rite of passage that has for so long been hidden, shamed, not spoken about, ignored is SO important.
What happens at menarche can impact a woman’s experience of her menstrual cycle, her birthing experiences, her menopause, her confidence, her creativity and her ability to contribute her gifts to the world.
Most of us had experiences at menarche ranging from ok to extremely traumatising. Even those of us who were actively celebrated by our families probably did not receive active celebration from our communities and definitely not from wider society.
The retrospective work that we do at the menarche ceremonies that we hold for adult women helps us to move through the limitations that resulted from the impact that our menarche had on us.
It can improve our experience of our menstrual cycle, subsequent births and menopause as well as allowing us to expand our creative range and live more liberated, powerful lives.
It is never too late to do a menarche ceremony – no matter where you are in your life cycle, and you cannot do this process “too many” times!
Reimagining Menarche
The process that we follow in our menarche ceremonies is one where we inquire into our own menarche, take a look at what it meant to us and how it impacted us.
We use somatic tools including breath, movement and sound in a sacred ceremony to help process whatever is moving in us.
And we celebrate and witness one another in our process in order to integrate all that has moved and reimprint our experience of menarche.
It is a truly powerful experience to be held in the womb matrix with a group of women and reimagine our menarche in this way.
Community Celebration
This year, what has come through is that the CELEBRATION aspect of this ceremony needs to be done in community.
As I’ve observed my son’s friends going through their own menarche processes over these past few years, what I’ve noticed is that although having a family that supports and celebrates menstruation, without the community holding and affirmation from wider society, the process can still be very difficult for young people to navigate.
And so the women’s work that we do is of VITAL importance, AND we need to bring it out of our women’s circles and into community celebration.
This means that the processing aspect of the menarche ceremonies will still be done in the safe women’s space that allows us to feel safe enough to touch our deep pain bodies and process our trauma…
…and the invitation for those of you to feel inspired to do so is to come to our Kundalini Shakti Menarche ceremony to do this processing, then at a later date we will be holding a community celebration of YOU (and us all) of you and your sacred blood (whether you are still cycling or not – post-menopausal women are especially welcome, women without wombs are especially welcome).
In this celebration, ALL will be welcome – sisters, brothers, fathers, mothers, daughters, sons – the children are especially welcome.
We cannot expect our children to celebrate their menarche until they have seen US doing this – again and again and again
Vision for the Future
My vision is that this community celebration will happen every year, year after year.
Each year, this celebration will take place and the women will come to be honoured and celebrated.
There will be singing, feasting, gifts, fire and the pouring of blood on the land in honour of Mamm Norvys - Mother Earth).
The celebration will be of anyone who has passed the menarche threshold – AND there is no pressure for anyone to be celebrated – the teens might just want to witness to begin with, and maybe one day they will want to join in.
And the girls who grow up coming to this celebration year after year might look forward to when it is their turn to cross this threshold and come and be celebrated by their community.

Post-Menopausal Women/ Women without a Physical Womb.
There can be a lot of grief for women who come to this work post-menopause – having never had the chance to celebrate their blood. Please know that if you are post-menopausal or/ and if you no longer have a womb, this work is JUST as vital for you, if not more so.
It is so valuable to re-imprint your menarche at this life stage to allow you to continue to grow and flourish into the Crones that our culture so badly needs.
Not only this, when you come to these ceremonies, you bring the embodied wisdom of the Maga and the Crone into the space to support women in other phases of their life cycle, and so your contribution is meaningful and your presence desired.
