Kristen Rae Bowden
The right kind of friction creates glorious sparks. Coursing within the heart and mind of singer-songwriter Kristen Rae Bowden is a beautiful turmoil of tenderness and willfulness. It’s a paradoxical sentiment also evident in her artistic sensibilities. Her latest series of singles is centered around the sparring of conscious and subconscious memories, and in the rub between the earthy and the electronic. Kristen’s artistry brims with clever metaphorical turns of phrases, raw emotionality, and imaginative musical arrangements. Her Americana song-craft is lavished by otherworldly textures, recalling the ethereal and emotionally evocative work of Phoebe Bridgers, Radiohead, Madi Diaz, and Kate Bush. In performance, Kristen exudes white-knuckle passion, pounding the shit out of her piano while sharing her majestic musicality.

Sbowe
Sbowe is the solo project of Rachel Icenogle, a versatile cellist and composer based in Calabria, Italy with a mind for new and interesting sounds. Sbowe thrives in the scratchy, creaky, whirly sounds the cello can make, layering diverse musical textures in a lush groundwork for wild fables about insects and impressionistic stories about human batteries. About her EP ‘Morimus’ (2022), Breaking & Entering Milwaukee wrote, “…the two tracks here create massive, textural, exquisite movements that feel poetic as they feel intentional. It’s like we’re observing both the gorgeous and tense moments of nature unfold in real time, punctuated by a variety of cello sounds.” Sbowe is currently on tour to celebrate the release of her first full-length album, Bat Hat.

Cast Shadows
Cast Shadows channels melodies from far-away places through accordion, piano, violin, guitar, and toy piano. Some of their influences are French musette accordion music, ragtime, Chopin, klezmer music, Spaghetti western soundtracks, and George Gershwin. They will be joining us this evening as a duo but play around the Richmond area normally as a trio.
Ian Blackwood (violin, mandolin, bass) is a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter who shines on fiddle and mandolin. You can catch him playing around town with various alt-country and folk ensembles, as well as his group Blackwood Station.
Salís Dembling (piano, accordion, toy instruments) has collaborated, recorded and toured with musicians such as Beck, April March, Leo LeBlanc (pedal steel player for John Prine and Merle Haggard), Ronnie Spector of the Ronettes, and Ward Dodson of L.A.’s the Gun Club, and has shared stages with Johnny Cash, Screamin Jay Hawkins, the Buzzcocks, and Elliott Smith. She co-founded the group Accordion Death Squad (Charlottesville, VA).
