Krampus is a figure from Alpine folklore who punishes naughty children during the Christmas season, serving as a counterpart to St. Nicholas. Originating from pre-Germanic traditions, Krampus punishes misbehaving children with birch branches or carrying them away in a sack. Celebrated on Krampusnacht (Krampus Night) on December 5th, the eve of St. Nicholas Day, the tradition continues today with parades called Krampusläufe (Krampus Runs).
