KPIs as Navigation Tools
Just like on an ocean-liner or airplane, where the captain and crew need navigation data to understand where they are relative to their planned route. Similarly, in business, KPIs are the vital navigation tools that managers use to understand whether the business is on a successful voyage or whether it is turning off the prosperous path. The right set of KPIs will shine light on the key aspects of performance and highlight areas that may need attention. Without the right set of KPIs managers are sailing or flying blind.
#KPIs as Key Decision-Making Tools
Effective decision-makers and managers understand that they need information on the key dimensions of performance and that this can be achieved by distilling them into the vital KPIs.
KPIs "represent a set of measures focusing on those aspects of organizational performance that are the most critical for the current and future success of the organization". KPIs are an invaluable form of business intelligence. When determined by an organization, they can educate every member of the company with regards to developing a strong team approach to business.
The Problem with Selecting the Right KPIs
The trouble is that there are 48000 of KPIs to choose from and companies find it hard to select the right ones for their business.
As per research finds that less than 10% of all the metrics that are collected, analyzed and reported in businesses are ever used to inform decision-making. 90% of the metrics are wasted, or worse, used to drown people in data while they are thirsting for insights.
To translate PMS into more formal business language Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) are the vital navigation tools that help organizations and individuals understand whether they are on the path that leads to success, or importantly not as the case may be, and drive the necessary changes in behavior and focus.
The correct set of KPIs help managers target areas of poor performance enabling insight to be gained and corrective action to be taken sooner. Also importantly, well-designed and managed KPIs allow managers to highlight areas of success and to communicate with and lead their teams with more conviction and positive focus. Clearly KPIs, when identified and designed correctly, and when properly managed have a huge bearing on the delivery of successful outcomes. Conversely, poorly designed KPIs, or KPIs that are poorly maintained can feed misinformation and build poor or incorrect insight, potentially scampering even the most successful enterprises. It is therefore vital to make sure that your KPIs have been well conceived and that they can be well maintained over time.
