The mighty Kostas Lazarides was born in Thessaloniki, Greece. When he was seven years old, his family immigrated to Billings, Montana.
Fascinated by music, the only child was drawn early to the songs of Buddy Holly and the Everly Brothers. As a youth, Kostas began slipping into local honky-tonks to play with live bands. By the early ’70s, he was performing his original songs on the Northwest club circuit and had built a solid following.
After nearly two decades of modest success one of his songs crossed the desk of producer Tony Brown, who was searching for material for Patty Loveless. In 1989, Loveless recorded Kostas’ “Timber, I’m Falling In Love,” making it his first cut, first single and first chart-topping song, and Kostas was named 1989 NSAI Songwriter of the Year.
Loveless would later take more Kostas songs to the Top 10: “The Lonely Side Of Love,” “On Down The Line” and “Blame It On Your Heart,” which was named the 1994 BMI Country Song of the Year.
Other Kostas hits include “Ain’t That Lonely Yet” and “Turn It On, Turn It Up, Turn Me Loose” by Dwight Yoakam, “Going Out Of My Mind” and “Love On The Loose Heart On The Run” by McBride & The Ride, “Lord Have Mercy On The Working Man” by Travis Tritt and “I Can Love You Better” by the Dixie Chicks.
The list of songs is long, and includes cuts by Wynonna Judd, The Mavericks, Kenny Chesney, Marty Stuart, Trisha Yearwood, Emmylou Harris, Hank Williams III... Anders Osborne, The Derailers, Chris LeDoux. If you’ve listened to the radio in the last thirty years, you’ve probably heard a Kostas song. In 2019, Kostas was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame.

After thirty years of relentless gigging and self-releasing four full-length albums, an EP, and two singles, Sean Devine’s songs are finally beginning to percolate on the radio. His 2021 album Here For It All, recorded with Cody Jinks’ band at Sonic Ranch near El Paso, Texas, spent 23 weeks in the Top 50 on Alt Country radio, peaking at #12. Sean’s original songs and instrumental music have appeared in several documentary and independent films, including two on Montana PBS - “Wolves In Paradise”, and “The Last Stronghold - The Miles City Bucking Horse Sale”.
Like Kostas, Sean started playing the Montana bar circuit as a teenager, and Sean has fond memories of going to see Kostas play at The Owl in Livingston while Sean’s band was on set break at The Longbranch Saloon. That was not long before “Timber I’m Falling In Love”. After that hit single, Kostas moved to Nashville, and a few years later was instrumental in helping Sean get a showcase slot at The Bluebird Cafe while Sean was touring his first album, Walking Down The Road.
The two have performed together here and there over the years, and their long friendship, and the mentorship that is a part of it, is felt in the stories and songs they have to share. Don’t miss this chance to see Kostas perform with Sean Devine in Billings in April!
