Welcome to the Korean Archery Seminar!Join us for a unique Korean Archery Workshop, where you'll explore the rich history and fascinating techniques of traditional Korean archery. This event provides a rare opportunity to learn about and experience two distinct styles: Western archery and Korean archery.
Event Schedule:
Introduction (14:00–14:30):We’ll begin with a brief overview of both Western and Korean archery. A representative from the local archery club will introduce Western archery, covering its history and key features.Following this, I will present Korean archery, highlighting its history, unique characteristics, and cultural significance. A special focus will be on the pyeonjeon—a short arrow, also known as aegisal ("baby arrows" in Korean), which requires a special tool called the tong-a for shooting. This demonstration will give participants a closer look at this remarkable element of Korean archery.
Shooting Practice (14:30–16:00):The heart of the workshop is the shooting practice, where participants will have the opportunity to experience both Western and Korean archery techniques. This hands-on session is suitable for beginners and seasoned archers alike.
Participants will rotate through the following activities:
Stance Training: Learn and practice the foundational stances for both Western and Korean archery, focusing on balance, posture, and alignment.
Grip Techniques: Understand how to properly hold the bow and nock the arrow, with guidance tailored to the nuances of each style.
Shooting Fundamentals:
- Master drawing the bowstring, aiming, and releasing the arrow with precision and confidence.
- Explore the thumb grip method, a distinctive feature of Korean archery. This method uses the thumb to hook the bowstring, reinforced by the index or middle finger for stability, allowing for a more efficient transfer of energy and greater accuracy. Participants will learn how to protect their thumb with a thumb ring and practice this technique under close supervision.
- Experience the differences between the thumb grip method used in Korean archery and the three-finger draw commonly employed in Western archery.
Additionally, you’ll have the chance to try shooting with traditional Korean bows, including demonstrations of how to use the tong-a to shoot the pyeonjeon. This will allow you to feel the dynamic power and precision of Korean archery. We’ll also compare shooting techniques between the two styles, emphasizing how cultural and historical contexts have influenced their development. Participants will have ample time to ask questions, refine their techniques, and enjoy the experience of archery in a supportive environment.
Join us for an afternoon of discovery, skill-building, and cultural immersion!
