About this Event

Evening all!

After such an epic 90's Summer Dreams event last month at the beautifully intimate Centrala space venue, Kohetry is back with another edition!

Shu'ara ~ 'Return To The Menbrain'.

This next edition we will be raising awareness for Men's mental well-being through live music & spoken word!

It can be difficult for our boys & menfolk to navigate through life in a world where boys & men are told 'Boys/Men don't cry', where they are taught by society that their mental health is not of importance thus making it hard for them to share their thoughts, feelings & emotions. This is a narrative we would like to change & something we feel passionately about!

"Over 700,000 people take their own life each year – that's one person every 40 seconds (World Health Organization) 115 people die by suicide in the UK every week – with 75% of those deaths being male (ONS) 1 in 5 people have suicidal thoughts (NHS Digital) 1 in 14 people self-harm (NHS Digital)"

To support our young boys & men in our society, we continue to build bridges of hope, change & open conversations about masculinity & mental health issues in a safe environment to challenge the stigmas that they face in their daily lives.

'We will teach our fathers, brothers, husbands & sons that they do not need to use their fists to be heard.' (K. Yasmin)

This next event will take a deep dive into the experiences of some of those men & young boys through live performances. Whether it's at work, in social settings, or in family dynamics, enough is enough.

We cannot wait to bring this event to life on Wednesday 27th of September!

We have an epic all-MALE headline with TWO DEBUT HEADLINES from West Midlands poets & also live music from a Birmingham-based musician bringing you soulful melodic vibes on the night! We will be announcing our headliners on INSTAGRAM so go turn on notifications so you don't miss the news! (TBA)

We will also be having a headline DJ set from an upcoming male DJ & multidisciplinary artist who is making waves with his brand & creativity! (TBA)

We also have a familiar face guest hosting with us on the night! (TBA)

We have a sensational line up of open micers! Due to high demand at the last event, all 10 slots have been allocated, dm the page www.instagram.com/kohetryfestival to be put on the reserve list!

Kohetry will be providing complimentary hot beverages throughout the night, & drinks can be purchased from the bar.

Clarky's Kitchen will be providing delicious warm food available to purchase throughout the night... I hear they're doing loaded fries, catering vegan & non-vegan options!

There will be a pop-up stall selling clothing & street apparel, a company run by a highly talented all-male group of young creatives making a debut at our event! So watch out for news about that! (TBA)

All Kohetry events are family-friendly, parents' discretion is advised as there will be sensitive topics shared, and trigger warnings will be given throughout the night.

Kohetry ethos - Inclusive space, No drugs or antisocial behavior.

Kohetry Shu'ara (Shu'ara meaning poets (plural) in Arabic) is a bi-monthly spoken word night on the last Wednesday on the odd months (Jan, March, May, July, Sept & Nov) hosted in the heart of Digbeth with a different theme each event!

This platform is to promote, nurture & sustain safe spaces for the creative & wider community whilst paying artists to headline each event along with slots to perform on the open mic to share your art & talent in a wholesome family-friendly setting.

We cannot wait to see you!

Love & light,

kohinoor & friends.
