About this Event

When disaster strikes — whether a flood, storm, fire, or other emergency — knowing your legal rights can make all the difference in protecting your home, health, and financial security.

Join NNJLS and Hoboken Public Library for an empowering, free workshop: “Know Your Rights: Before, During & After a Disaster.”

In this session, you’ll learn:

  • Before a Disaster
    • What legal and documentation steps to take now. (e.g. preserving important papers, insurance info, communicating with landlords)
    • Rights related to housing, tenants, and access to critical services.
    • How to prepare, plan, and get ready (e.g. emergency kits, family plans).
  • During a Disaster
    • What protections you have if your home becomes unsafe.
    • What you should (or should not) do if officials order evacuation or access your property.
    • Your rights when interacting with disaster or relief agencies.
  • After a Disaster
    • How to file FEMA or disaster relief claims.
    • Legal recourses for unsafe or unlivable housing.
    • Replacing important documents lost in the disaster.
    • Scams or frauds that often arise post-disaster, and how to avoid them.

NNJLS’s disaster legal assistance includes help with FEMA/disaster insurance claims, unsafe housing conditions, and more.

Who Should Attend:
Free and Open to the public.

This workshop is ideal for residents of Hoboken, Hudson County, neighboring New Jersey communities, and anyone seeking to protect themselves in an emergency.
