In this session, you’ll learn:
- Before a Disaster
• What legal and documentation steps to take now. (e.g. preserving important papers, insurance info, communicating with landlords)
• Rights related to housing, tenants, and access to critical services.
• How to prepare, plan, and get ready (e.g. emergency kits, family plans). - During a Disaster
• What protections you have if your home becomes unsafe.
• What you should (or should not) do if officials order evacuation or access your property.
• Your rights when interacting with disaster or relief agencies. - After a Disaster
• How to file FEMA or disaster relief claims.
• Legal recourses for unsafe or unlivable housing.
• Replacing important documents lost in the disaster.
• Scams or frauds that often arise post-disaster, and how to avoid them.
NNJLS’s disaster legal assistance includes help with FEMA/disaster insurance claims, unsafe housing conditions, and more.
