A practical session for primary school teachers focused on using local heritage in the curriculum
About this Event

This session is part of a series of workshops for primary school teachers based in Sheffield who want to help their children know more about the place where they live and their local heritage. This workshop focusses on change over time and uses resources and activities to bring learning to life.

This day will be in two parts.

In the morning:

  • Explore how Sheffield has changed, from its earliest beginnings to the present day. You will have opportunities to see where the local Sheffield story links to the national story and where it can fit within both your history and wider curriculum.
  • Explore significant changes within and beyond living memory using maps and aerial photographs. You will be provided with resources, tools and activities to take away which will enable you to build your own progressive units of work. This will include practical guidance on incorporating both substantive and disciplinary knowledge in history, geography skills and other opportunities for cross curricular learning.
  • This session will include a free Sheffield resource pack to take away with maps, aerial photos and digital resources.

In the afternoon:

  • Learn more about how Sheffield Heritage Organisations can support you to build place-based learning into your curriculum.
  • Explore ideas for the study of two significant places:
  • Enjoy a guided tour of Manor Lodge as a possible in-depth study of a local site
  • What’s happening in Castlegate? A unique opportunity for a guided tour of this archaeological site and to learn its significance to the story of Sheffield.
