About this Event
About this Programme
Sustainability starts with knowing where our food comes from. That being said, do you know where your seafood comes from or what the different types of fish there are at our wet markets? Join nature guide Elliott James Ong and seafood-lover Kenny Lek on a fishery tour of Tekka Market! Meet the marine species that we’re more used to seeing in hawker dishes and learn more about where they come from, their ecology and the threat of overfishing.
This programme is targetted at a general audience, including teens and those aged 50 and above.
Please note:
Participants are to meet at Little India MRT Station Exit C at 8am (please see image below). No transport will be provided.
Participants are asked to arrive on time so that the tour can depart promptly. Waiting for latecomers will be at the tour guides' discretion.
Important Notice: Participants' Safety
*Participants are reminded to ensure that they wear comfortable clothing and footwear with good grip, as the flooring at Tekka Market may be wet and slippery.
About the Guides
Elliott is a conservationist and nature guide who works to encourage positive change for people and nature in Southeast Asia. He has always had an interest in sustainable seafood and the wildlife trade, having previously worked on sea cucumber and fish maw trade in Singapore and Malaysia. He believes that getting to know the food that we eat is the first step to encouraging sustainable consumption.
As a true blue Teochew Singaporean, Kenny's first love affair with seafood was Teochew steamed fish. From this love of seafood, an appreciation of nature and its diverse range of residents quickly grew. Having worked at the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), where he learnt the importance of protecting and conserving our natural world, his experiences have enabled him to combine his passion for seafood with a fervent care for our natural environment.
