Den Festivalauftakt macht das Berliner Trio Lange//Berweck//Lorenz. Mit ihrem Labor aus analogen und digitalen Synthesizern sowie weiteren Maschinen spielen die drei Musiker*innen neue, speziell für das Trio geschriebene Werke von Kirsten Reese, Midori Hirano und Bernhard Lang. Das Hamburger Ensemble Nelly Boyd präsentiert im Anschluss eine Komposition von Robert Engelbrecht. Das Stück ist geschrieben für sechs Instrumentalist*innen (drei E-Gitarren, Klavier vier-händig und Perkussion) mit sechs separaten Zuspielungen elektronischer Klänge.

Der österreichische Komponist Klaus Lang ist Composer in Residence im klub katarakt 2022. Musik ist für Lang ein freies, für sich stehendes akustisches Objekt. In seinen Arbeiten wird Klang nicht benutzt, sondern vielmehr hörend erforscht, und »ihm wird die Möglichkeit gegeben, seine ihm innewohnende reiche Schönheit zu entfalten« (Lang). Nach einer Lecture zu seiner kompositorischen Arbeit wird Lang in einem Konzert mit dem österreichischen Trio Amos und der Pianistin Tamriko Kordzaia verschiedene Werke aus der langjährigen Zusammenarbeit mit den Musiker*innen vorstellen und auch selbst am Harmonium zu hören sein. Im Programm des Porträtkonzerts ist auch die Uraufführung einer neuen, von klub katarakt in Auftrag gegebenen Komposition. Das Trio Amos besteht aus den Musiker*innen Sylvie Lacroix (Flöte), Michael Moser (Violoncello) und Krassimir Sterev (Akkordeon).

Der portugiesische Perkussionist Gustavo Costa eröffnet den 3. Festivaltag. Costa, der Gründer des Kollektivs Sonoscopia aus Porto und ein wichtiger Impulsgeber für aktuelle Musik in Portugal ist, wird sein erstes Solo-Album »Entropies and Mimetic Patterns« vorstellen. Im Hauptkonzert tritt The Interstring Project auf, ein fünfköpfiges Ensemble, dessen Mitglieder akustische und elektrische Gitarren mit Objekten, Präparationen, Effektgeräten und Live-Elektronik kombinieren. In seinem neuen multimedialen Konzert »inter/face« reflektiert das Ensemble über das Interface als technisches und philosophisches Konzept: die Suche nach der Schnittstelle zwischen Mensch und Computer, Interpret*in und Komponist*in, Künstler*in und Publikum. Aufgeführt werden Werke von Hunjoo Jung, Sarah Nemtsov und Francisco Uberto, begleitet von und erweitert durch ein Licht-Konzept des deutschen Künstlers Cornelius Reitmayr. Im Nachtkonzert präsentiert Julia Eckhardt eine neue Soloperformance für Viola und Zuspielung. Die Musikerin arbeitet an der Schnittstelle zwischen komponierter und improvisierter Musik.

In der Langen Nacht präsentiert klub katarakt fünf kürzere Einzelkonzerte. Die in Berlin lebende kolumbianische Musikerin Lucrecia Dalt verbindet in ihrer Arbeit die zwei Welten der Avantgarde und der zeitgenössischen elektronischen Musik. Dalt präsentiert ihr neues Album „No era sólida“ (VÖ September 2020) sowie weitere Stücke. Valentina Magaletti ist eine italienische Schlagzeugerin und Komponistin aus London, die ihre folkloristische und eklektische Palette durch Hören und Experimentieren mit neuen Materialien und Klängen strategisch bereichert. Ihre Arbeiten reichen von Jazz-Ansätzen bis zu Drone- und Field-Recordings und experimentellen / Avantgarde Produktionen. Der in Berlin lebende italienische Schlagzeuger Andrea Belfi ist bekannt für seine energie-geladenen Auftritte. Sein neues Album „Ore“, das er bei klub katarakt vorstellen wird, stellt das Schlagzeug ins Zentrum eines tiefgehenden, hypnotischen Hörerlebnisses, in dem sich Rhythmus mit elektronischen Texturen verbindet. Luka Lenzin alias Emol lebt mit Musik und Illustration in Hamburg. Lenzin ist Mitglied der Bands plastiq und TWISK und Teil des Kollektivs ZOLLO. In Kombination von Stimme und Elektronik erschafft Emol eine sehr persönliche, intime Klangwelt zwischen Experiment und Pop, in der Synthesizer, Geräusche und Stimme die Sprachinformation modulieren. Das Hamburger Ensemble Nelly Boyd spielt eine räumliche Komposition von Jan Feddersen für zwei Stimmen, vier E-Gitarren und Zuspielung. Den Festivalausklang gestalten gemeinsam die DJs JONH (Berlin) & THCB (Hamburg).

In it’s 17th year now, Hamburg based music festival klub katarakt has dedicated itself to present experimental music outside of the impenetrable walls of academia. From the start, klub katarakt’s core identity has been defined through openness – considering the integrity of artistic visions as much as the fact that its audience does not, nor should it, consist exclusively of contemporary music experts. Ranging from the unusual to the avant-garde, the performances presented at klub katarakt are supposed to excite, no matter your background.

Wed – January 19th / starting 8pm
The festival will be kicked off by Berlin based electro-acoustical trio Lange//Berweck//Lorenz. Silke Lange, Sebastian Berweck and Martin Lorenz will be taking the stage with a laboratory of analogue and digital synthesizers and machines –performing pieces specifically written for them by Kirsten Reese, Midori Hirano and Bernhard Lang. Next, Hamburg based ensemble Nelly Boyd will perform a piece by Robert Engelbrecht, written for six instrumentalists (three electric guitars, piano four hands, and percussion) with six separate playbacks of electronic multichannel sounds.

Thur – January 20th / starting 6pm
Austrian composer Klaus Lang is klub katarakt’s 2022 composer in residence. To him, music is a freestanding acoustic object. In his work, Lang doesn’t use sound. He rather explores it while listening closely, and "gives it the opportunity to unfold its inherent beauty." (Lang)
Following a lecture about his compositional work, Lang will be taking the stage with Austrian Trio Amos and pianist Tamriko Kordzaia to present several pieces resulting from his long-standing collaborations with the aforementioned musicians. Lang himself will be playing the harmonium. Furthermore, a new work commissioned by klub katarakt will be premiered at the concert. Trio Amos are musicians Sylvie Lacroix (flute), Michael Moser (violoncello) and Krassimir Sterev (accordeon).

Fri – January 21st / starting 7:30pm
The third day starts out with a solo concert by Portuguese percussionist Gustavo Costa. The founder of Porto based collective Sonoscopia has been an important figure in Portugal’s contemporary music and sound art scene for years. At klub katarakt, he will be performing his first ever solo album Entropies and Mimetic Patterns. For the main concert of the day, The Interstring Project will take the stage, a five piece ensemble working within the grey area between New Music, progressive rock and electronics. On stage, the ensemble combines acoustic and electric guitars with objects, preparations, effects and live-electronics. Performing their new multimedia concert »inter/face«, they will play original pieces by Hunjoo Jung, Sarah Nemtsov und Francisco Uberto. A light and live visual concept by German artist Cornelius Reitmayr will tie the pieces together and make the concert an immersive and dynamic experience. For the late concert, Julia Eckhardt will be presenting a new solo performance for viola and playbacks. Eckhardt works at the intersection of composed and improvised music.

Sat – January 22nd / starting 8pm
The so-calledLong Night, during which we will present five shorter concerts, will bring the festival to a close. Berlin based Columbian musician Lucrecia Dalt encompasses the dual worlds of avant-garde and contemporary electronic music. Originally scheduled for 2021, she will finally perform her current record »No era Sólida« (released September 2020) – accompanied by some new tracks created during the pandemic. Valentina Magaletti is an Italian drummer, percussionist and composer based in London whose goal is to strategically enrich a folkloristic and eclectic palette through endless listening and experimentation with new materials and sounds. Her work ranges from more conventional jazz approaches all the way to drone / field recordings as well as experimental and avant-garde productions. The Berlin based Italian drummer Andrea Belfi has gained a reputation for his energetic and charismatic performance. His new album »Ore«, which he will be performing at klub katarakt, places drums at the centre of a deep, hypnotic listening experience, where rhythm is combined with electronic textures and haunting sonic details. Luka Lenzin aka Emol lives and works in Hamburg, making music and illustrating. Lenzin is part of the bands plastiq and TWISK, as well as a member of the collective ZOLLO. Their amalgamation of vocals and electronics creates an intimate sound cosmos oscillating between experiment and pop in which synthesizers, sounds and vocals modulate the basic information carried by language. Nelly Boyd’s second performance of the festival will present a piece by Jan Feddersen accentuating the aspect of spatiality. DJs JONH (Berlin) & THCB (Hamburg) will bring the festival to a close.
