Kirtan is the musical embodiment of “bhakti yoga” – the yoga of devotion. It traditionally involves a call and response style of singing mantras originally chanted by the yogis of ancient India. The word “mantra” itself can be translated as “freeing of the true mind”, and the benefits of chanting or listening to the sacred syllables has been scientifically documented. Furthermore, the chanting of mantras in a community setting synchronizes our breathing, and even our heartbeats, so that we achieve a spiritual connection with those around us.You will be lead through a Call-and-Response chanting of ancient Sanskrit mantras (and one or two other inspirational chants) which quiet the mind and soothe the soul when practiced with intention and an open heart. Before each Mantra, ShantiMaya will share short tales and anecdotes about the mantras, their meanings, their origins in ancient India, and how they affect us in today’s world and have influenced our own personal journey.

About ShantiMaya:
Betty and Bill are from Kitchener, Ontario. They have shared a life journey of 40 years together as engineers, travelers and yogis. As ShantiMaya, they have been leading kirtan (the practice of chanting mantra music from India) since 2014, and have trained with many artists and practitioners across North America during that time. ShantiMaya has led kirtan at over 100 yoga studios and festivals across Canada and the U.S.
They compose original melodies played on harmonium and classical guitar, and have produced three studio albums plus three additional singles covering a cross section of mantras from a diversity of sources from ancient India.
Their long years of partnership become evident the moment the music starts to flow!
