Kirsten Taylor is a multimedia artist based in the tallgrass prairie ecoregion. Deeply influenced by her rural childhood, her work explores the interconnected relationships between humans and the natural world. By using embodied learning methods, she engages directly with nature, collecting materials such as clay, plants, and sounds from my surroundings. Taylor’s practice is often site-specific and always deeply rooted in place.
Guided by science, indigenous teachings, and Black feminism, Taylor seeks to understand how we can reconnect with and reconstruct a better world. She hopes to foster empathy and connection with others, human and more-than-human alike. Her art manifests in mixed media sculptures, videos, installations, poetry, and social practice projects. Past works have addressed themes like the loss of ecological knowledge, human constructs of wilderness, invasive species, and habitat restoration. Through my her practice, she explore art's potential for healing and creating positive cultural change.
Kirsten Taylor holds an MFA from the University of Kansas and a BA in Studio Art from Baylor University. Taylor has exhibited nationally at venues including 108 Contemporary, Indianapolis Art Center, and the Leedy Voulkos Art Center. Taylor received an Artist-in-Residence position at Shawnee Mission Park with Johnson County Parks and Recreation Department in 2022.
