Check for tickets and more information our website: www.kingofthecourt.comThe absolute highlight on the way to the German championships is the hosting of the new and innovative "King of the Court" format. In principle, the well-known beach volleyball rules are used, but five teams face each other in a kind of round trip. The game is not played until the end of a usual set of 21, but in total of 4 "sessions" of 15 minutes. At the end of each session the team with the most points wins and the team with the least points steps out. A countdown runs down continuously, there are practically no breaks within those 15 minutes. This fast-paced and short-term nature is what distinguishes the “King of the Court”: the ball is always on court, there is always “action” and uninterrupted play on the field.
The service is exclusively from the “challenger side” to the “king side”, whereby the challenger may switch to the king side in the event of a successful rally (without receiving a point). If the king's side is successful, i.e. can fend off the serve of the challenger, this team receives one point and can continue on the king's side. When a rally is over, a waiting team moves up on the challenger side.
A novelty within this format will also take place from August 19-22: both a national and an international tournament will take place together. The national tournament is part of the German Beach Tour and contributes to the qualification ranking for the German championships. The first three of the national tournament qualify for the semifinals of the international tournament, which, as most recently for the Beach Volleyball World Championship 2019 at Hamburg's Rothenbaum, hosts top international athletes. As usual in beach volleyball, the tournaments for women and men are held simultaneously (20 national teams and 20 international teams, i.e. 80 teams in total).
