This three-part workshop is perfect for your young person age 10+ to gain a strong foundation in the fundamentals of hand sewing. They will learn how to measure, cut, sew and modify using historical materials like linen, silk and wool from heritage mills. They will learn the basic hand stitches to construct sturdy and versatile items, how to sew buttons, hem, and work on basic seam treatments. Once they learn these fundamental techniques, they will have the confidence to continue to explore, experiment and construct more involved projects. At the end of this session, they will have made their own heirloom "housewife," an 18th Century style travel sewing kit (examples pictured above). Everyone from soldiers to grandmas had these. It will be a cherished item to carry throughout their lives and even continue decorating.
Teacher Èirigh Stewart allows students time and space to find their interests and let their individual development shape how and what they do. With a small, limited group of students in class, each participant will receive the personal attention needed to succeed.
After this three-class series where students have an opportunity to dive in and get a sense of what is possible, what they enjoy or don't, they are then qualified to sign up for more advanced sewing classes on Saturdays where they will continue developing their skills.
INCLUDED: Pre-assembled sewing supplies with high-quality needles, bird scissors, beeswaxed threads and fabrics will be included. This kit includes all materials needed to participate in this series.
