Kidical Mass PDX NW kids’ bike ride and sunset birdwatching picnic!Every September over 10,000 Vaux’s Swifts fly overhead as they prepare to roost for the night in the chimney at Chapman Elementary. Swift watching is popular, some days more than 2000 people gather to watch the birds perform their aerial acrobats.
We’ll ride from the Jamison Square in the Pearl District to Chapman Elementary on neighborhood greenways, then watch the birds till sunset, while having a picnic dinner The ride is a 1.5 miles one-way and a 3 mile loop total. If you need help getting back to the east side of the river, some of us will be heading to Northeast afterward.
Meet at 5:15, ride at 5:30pm sharp, so we can arrive by 6:00 to picnic and then watch the birds spiral in to the chimney around sunset at 7:09pm. We will return after sunset around 7:30ppm and be back around 8pm
We ride slow for little pedalers. Kids should wear a helmet, be able to pedal a bike without training wheels in a straight line, start and stop. Cargo bikes, tandems, trailers and tag-a-longs are great for kids who haven’t learned to pedal and balance, or get tired soon. This ride will end after sunset, so front headlights are required for all bikes making the ride back. We'll ride together as a group, because kids are traffic too!
