Join us for the Calgary premiere of two short films by award-winning filmmaker Kiana Rawji: INSIDE JOB and MAMA OF MANYATTA, both filmed in Kenya, followed by a moderated Q&A with Kiana, herself. Kiana is a graduate from Harvard College where she studied Film and History & Literature. Through filmmaking, she strives to amplify social issues & drive cultural change. Her short documentary, LONG DISTANCE about migrant workers at an Albertan meat plant won the Grand Jury Prize for Best Alberta Short Film at the 2021 Calgary International Film Festival and screened at several festivals across the US/Canada. Kiana's TEDx talks on pluralism within Islam and the Cosmopolitan Ethic have reached over 150,000 viewers worldwide. Her previous films and talks can be found at www.kianarawji.com.
INSIDE JOB, based on Kiana's Harvard thesis research on the South Asian diaspora in East Africa, is a fictional film about an Indian woman in 1970s Nairobi who suspects her African domestic workers of theft. Informed by oral history research, the film received the Harvard Film Department’s Arnheim prize for most outstanding interdisciplinary undergraduate project, and it premiered at the 2023 Chicago South Asian Film Festival.
MAMA OF MANYATTA is a short documentary that follows an extraordinary woman fighting HIV and gender-based violence in a slum in Kisumu, Kenya. The film screened at the 2023 Pan African Film Festival, Essence Film Festival, and Zanzibar International Film Festival, where it was awarded a Special Jury Mention. In 2023, both MAMA and INSIDE JOB a sold-out at the Nanji Family Foundation Auditorium at the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto.
