The Kerala House Boat Race is being run by the Irish Dragon Boat Association on behalf of Kerala House which is a non-profitable, socio-cultural club formed by the Indian community in Ireland. The dragon boat is the nearest thing we have in Ireland to the traditional Snake Boats which are found in the Kerala region of India.The Snake Boat is so called for its resemblance to the shape of a hooded snake and is the traditional naval boat of Kerala. The locals in Kerala call it by the pet name Chundan Vallam, because of the resemblance of the boat's prow to that of a bird's beak.
