For this special evening, The Listyning Room welcomes Kent Lauridsen as he presents a firsthand guide through the deeper currents of reggae. He’ll be spinning tunes from a wide range of artists who, though not household names, are revered within the world of reggae.
Kent’s love for the music began in the early ’80s and was shaped in the most unlikely of places: a grungy Jamaican pool hall in Dallas, TX. There he poured out rocksteady, lovers rock, rub-a-dub, roots reggae, UK dub, dancehall and more from a tiny DJ booth to a wildly mixed crowd.
This 90-minute set highlights artists such as Mikey Dread, Jackie Mittoo, Dennis Bovell, Augustus Pablo, Dub Syndicate, Ernest Ranglin, Gregory Isaacs, Bim Sherman and others you’ve likely not heard of before. It’s a tour of reggae’s richness and stylistic variety: deep basslines, soulful melodies, hypnotic instrumentals, and unforgettable grooves rarely heard outside devoted circles.
